Utange, a sustainability education project with Italian schools

A sustainability education project is set to begin at the Lifog School in Utange, involving a network comprising the Gobetti and Cocchetti schools in Milan and the Galileo Galilei High School in Borgomanero and Gozzano. The initiative stems from the collaboration between students in Utange and those at the Italian schools, thanks to the efforts of Alessandra Parodi, a teacher from the Novara area.

The central theme will be a comparison between zoos and conservation areas to reflect on the true meaning of nature conservation: not putting humans at the centre, but respecting plants and animals. The project also aims to highlight the experience of Kenya, which is promoting the transformation of many zoos and the expansion of protected areas. In July, there will be educational activities and exchanges of photos and videos between the pupils, and on 27 July, a visit to the Mombasa giraffe sanctuary for classes 7, 8 and 9 of Lifog School Junior Secondary, with the support of 'Vivicarlino-ODV' and accompanied by Alessio Modrian from 'Il Corpo Nel Mondo-ETS'.

Alongside the educational programme, there will be other activities: a sewing workshop to mend school uniforms, minor computer maintenance, the purchase of textbooks to enrich the library, and a joint musical project, which will see students and volunteers singing 'Baba Yetu' together during the religious service on 26 July. A series of initiatives that brings together education, collaboration and friendship between communities that are far apart yet growing ever closer.
